Why We Love Eddie the Eagle

My family recently watched and loved the movie “Eddie the Eagle” (2015).

Listen to the audible version of this post at: God in Sixty Seconds

The movie is based on the true story of Eddie the Eagle the English ski-jumper who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

Despite all the people who said he couldn’t, Eddie enters the ski-jump, and became the inspirational feel-good story of the Olympics.

But the flipside of this story is that Eddie’s nickname “The Eagle” is obviously ironic.

Because no matter how much Eddie believes in himself, he can’t soar like an eagle.

No matter how much he believes, he still did come last by a long way.

Only an eagle can soar like an eagle. And only a winner can be a winner.

But God’s promise to us is this: if we believe in and belong to Team Jesus, we will soar on wings like eagles.

That’s because they will be his wings and not ours.

No matter how much of a loser we are. No matter how little we have to believe in ourselves. God is the winner who believes in us.

But please don’t do the ski-jump. Not unless you have a lot of insurance and want an ironic nickname.
